The presidential turkey pardon, one of the more amusing traditions, first started in 1963 when John F. Kennedy stated he wouldn’t eat one for the holiday. It was newspapers that actually reported he had “pardoned” one. The tradition was formalized in 1989 under George H.W. Bush.
