Completed in 1885, the Home Insurance Building in Chicago was the world's first skyscraper. The ten-storey building stood 42 metres tall. While it pales in comparison with today's architectural achievements like the Burj Khalifa, currently the tallest building on the planet at 830 metres, it towered every other building at the time.
